Feeding Administration
Gastric Gavage
1. Check OGT placement by auscultating for gastric sounds.
2. Aspirate for gastric residual if feeding reaches more than 10 ml. Refer if gastric aspirate is more than 30%.
3. Administer OGT feeding as ordered.
4. Position baby on moderate high back rest while fed.
5. Burp baby.
6. Close OGT for 1 hour after feeding.
7. Position baby on right side to facilitate gastric emptying.
8. Observe feeding tolerance.
9. Observe for abdominal tenderness, increased abdominal girth, vomiting or any other unusualities.
10. Record intake.
*OGT may be kept closed if it is for feeding only.
Breastfeeding
1. Allow mother inside breastfeeding area and let her change slippers. Let her wear a gown, facemask and bonnet.
2. Alcoholize mother’s hand and clean nipples with PNSS-soaked cotton balls.
3. Let mother assume proper hold of the baby and angle head to mother’s breast.
4. Let the baby breastfed.
5. Have mother burp the baby after feeding.
6. Position baby on right side to facilitate gastric emptying.
7. Observe feeding tolerance.
8. Record intake.
Per Orem Feedings
1. Feed baby per cup slowly.
2. Position baby on moderate high back rest.
3. Burp thereafter.
4. Position baby on right side to facilitate gastric emptying.
5. Observe feeding tolerance.
