Surfactant Replacement Therapy
1. Check doctor’s order.
2. Prepare the following prior to the procedure:
a. OGT Fr. 5
b. Sterile iris scissor
c. Disposable Needle G. 19 / 18
d. Surfactant solution (should be refrigerated)
e. Syringe 10cc
f. Sterile gloves
g. Suction catheter
h. Suction apparatus
3. Withdraw the surfactant solution using the 10cc syringe. Dosage is based on doctor’s orders.
4. Perform hand washing.
5. Do gloving.
6. Suction oral secretion.
7. Prepare the resuscitation bag. Remove mechanical ventilator tube from the endotracheal tube. Attach resuscitation bag and hyperventilate patient.
8. Do endotracheal tube suctioning prior to the procedure. Make sure that oxygen saturation is stable prior to suctioning.
9. Cut the orogastric tube to desired length and attach syringe containing the surfactant. Assist the doctor in surfactant instillation via the ETT.
10. Do bagging as indicated.
11. Position patient as ordered.
12. Observe for unusualities and refer accordingly.
