Handling Newborns upon Delivery
Hand washing must be done firsthand.
2. Prepare the receiving table with layette and diaper.
3. Prepare the intubation set checking the laryngoscope and endotracheal tube sizes. Check the availability of emergency drugs, like epinephrine, naloxone. Keep the meconium aspirator at hand especially for post-term babies.
4. Attach the Twin-O-Vac bottle to the suction. Check oxygen level.
5. Have the gassed-up rubber tubing attached to the TOV suction port and the other end connected to the suction catheter of either Fr. 5 or Fr. 8 varying on the baby’s age of gestation.
6. Prepare the facemask bag in case of emergency resuscitation. Have the facemask bag connected to the oxygen. Make sure there is enough water on the humidifier.
7. The neonatal stethoscope must be within easy reach.
8. As soon as the OB pack and DR set are opened, pick the top most sterile gown with the pick-up forceps or ovum forceps and aseptically lay it on the second receiving table. Make sure it is covering as much space as possible.
9. Transfer the small bowl with 3 cherry balls and soak it with betadine paint.
10. Open a pack of sterile OS and lay each along with the small bowl.
11. Ready the umbilical scissors on the receiving table.
12. Check if the tape measure, Vitamin K, Ophthalmic ointment and thermometer are ready for use on the underside of the sterile gown.
13. Open the cord clamp and drop it atop the OS.
14. Prepare the surgical gloves to be worn.
15. Perform hand washing again in preparation for the imminent childbirth.
16. Do gloving aseptically.
17. Assist in handling the baby from the mother’s abdomen to the receiving table.
